Special thanks to staff at the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library and the Digital Curation Services, both at the University of Virginia. Margaret O’Bryant at the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society Library was particularly helpful and knowledgeable. Christopher Eads, Architect and independent researcher, provided insight about regular and botanic medical practice as well as the articles concerning Drs. Hughes and Poindexter in the Botanico-Medical Recorder and information about Poindexter’s medical degree.
