    NEED MORE STUDY SPACE?

It is not unusual to see more traffic in the Library during this upcoming week as students from across the University are preparing for exams. A helpful reminder is that the ground floor group study rooms are available for reservation by Health System affiliates only – so please take advantage of that and reserve the rooms for your use. Here is a link to the policies, procedures and map of available rooms:

    AFTER-HOURS LIBRARY ACCESS

I would like to remind you that you can access the Library’s after-hours space through the use of a valid Health System badge. It is extremely important not to prop the door open or to allow non-Health System students into this space once the Library closes. This is a violation of Health System policy and puts everyone at risk.  If you have any concerns or questions, please contact me directly or speak to the Library staff on duty during extended hours.

  • Sloane Society Lectures 03.12.2012 Comments Off

You are invited to a special event entitled “Herbert Howells’ Requiem: Dealing with Illness and Death,” presented by Rondy Michael Lazaro and co-sponsored by Music in Medicine and the Sloane Society.  The event will take place on Tuesday, December 4, at 12:10 P.M. in the 3rd Floor Auditorium of the Claude Moore Medical Education Building.

The Requiem for a cappella chorus by English composer Herbert Howells (1892-1983) is an introspective and gripping work that was written around the time Howells’ son died of polio in 1935. I will discuss how the loss of Howells’ son affected the composer’s music and also touch upon the historical context of polio in the 1930s. A chamber choir will sing selected excerpts from the Requiem and conclude with a performance of two movements from the Requiem.

After the talk, there will be a reception with dessert in the Mulholland Student Lounge (2nd floor of the Claude Moore Medical Education Building). I hope you will be able to attend this event!
