I have received a question about Sylvius Pro’s availability in the Library, and thought I should share this with you. I checked with your Professor and she sent me this information from your class website. The Department of NeuroSciences purchased the copies currently in the Library (it is quite expensive for a site license compared to other products like the anatomy one, so that is why we don’t have it available throughout the Library).

The good news is that in addition to the 6 in the 24-Hour Room – there are also 2 in Cabell for regular Library hours use. You may want to consider downloading your own copy from their website for a very reasonable fee and that way you can use it from home – day or night. See below. Hope this helps! Karen

    >>We do have a required text (Purves 4th ed). This is what our syllabus says about the Sylvius software:

“the Sylvius software that comes bundled with the Purves Textbook is a valuable tool for reviewing the gross and sectional anatomy of the nervous system online. The SylviusPro software installed on 6 of the 24 hour computers in the Health Sciences Library is an earlier version of the Sylvius 4 software, but both versions are functionally equivalent. Be aware that access to the HSL computers becomes difficult in the week prior to an exam. You may opt to purchase a download of the Sylvius 4 software from Kagi online (without the bundled text) for approximately $45.00.”

In summary, if they bought the required text they would have received the code for the download of the software. If they decided against buying the text they could have purchased a personal copy of the software for $45. If they are relying on access through the library, they are relying on a limited resource.<<
