Psychiatryonline is a wonderful resource for those doing their Psychiatric Clerkship or any work that is specific to the field.  This collection of e-books, journal articles, and news is published by the American Psychiatric Publishing (APA) group – the same group that publishes the famous Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

The latest edition of the Manual is DSM-5 and Psychiatryonline not only contains the main text but also related books, such as:

    • DSM-5 Clinical Cases
    • DSM-5 Handbook of Differential Diagnosis

There is a “Book of the Month” that can be downloaded as a PDF and many other books such as:

    • Gabbard’s Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders
    • Dulcan’s Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
    • Manual of Clinical Psychopharmacology

In addition to the books, you can easily browse the current and past issues of APA journals such as The American Journal of Psychiatry.

The Library offers unlimited simultaneous use of Psychiatryonline.  You can easily get to it from the Medical Student Portal by clicking on “E-Books: Search E-Books by Collection” or search for individual book titles from the “E-Books A-Z Title list”.

You might just find yourself exhibiting compulsive behavior by returning to it time and again!

    firstconsult

The popular program known as MD Consult ceased to exist on January 1, 2014, and has been morphed into an even larger new product called Clinical Key.  You will get to know Clinical Key primarily for the thousand plus online books that it makes readily available.

I plan to have several more posts about important features of Clinical Key – but for now, the most important thing is to register for a “personal account”. The personal account will allow you to take full advantage of Clinical Key’s many features – the best one being the ability to download whole book chapters!

The other reason to establish a personal account is to use the First Consult app.  First Consult is an evidence-based point-of-care tool that can be searched from within Clinical Key, but works best as an app on your phone or ipad. You will find First Consult in the Apple App Store.

Load it and begin using it with your Clinical Key login.  Please let me know what you think of First Consult and Clinical Key.

I am pleased to present a new resource guide -  Selecting a Residency.  This site highlights pertinent print and e-books in the Library’s collection, as well as Web resources, that may help students learn more about medical specialties and selecting a residency program.

This Guide can be found under Resource Guides – in the right column on the Medical Student Library Portal page.

I am sure you know of additional resources that might be helpful in selecting a residency, and I hope you will share them in the comments below!

I understand fellow-student Lee Eschenroeder and Dr. Carl Creutz have beaten me to the mark in answering this question for all of you – but I will post about it anyway! Our e-book product, Access Medicine, has a section called “Q & A” that has sample questions (not all of them) from the popular Lange series of review textbooks.

You will see from the list of titles below that one is the Trevor/Katzung’s Pharmacology: Examination and Board Review Book (10th edition). There are over 800 review questions available from this book.  I wanted to see if we could buy the entire set of questions to add to our e-book collection, but I am afraid it was too expensive for us to purchase.  We did, however, buy the print copy of the book and it can be found on the Library’s Reserve Shelves under the call number: RM 300/K38/2013.

I always enjoy hearing from you – so please leave comments or let me know what other information resources you need. I cannot always be sure we can buy them – but it is always worth looking into. Thank you to Dr. Creutz for originally bringing this to my attention and then Lee for following up!

The Library is pleased to announce the availability of an online version of this popular book.  The online version of Learning Radiology: Recognizing the Basics by William Herring can be accessed any time and any place – just like with all of our e-books and e-journals.

This text has required readings within the SOM curriculum and our one print library copy was tattered from your diligent use!  All Library e-books can be accessed from the Medical Student Portal under “Full-Text Books” and can be searched by subject, title and/or collection.

Learning Radiology is licensed for only 1-2 simultaneous users from our R2 Digital Library vendor. If you encounter a “busy or not available” status for this book, please try to access it again in a few minutes.

July has been a cruel month here in Charlottesville – excessive heat and no power or rain.  This is the kind of vacation I hope you are having instead – lots of books, a vintage woodie, and a surfboard on top!

A physician recently donated some books. The Library does not accept donations – but I thought you all might want them.  They are heavily used popular titles – they may be one edition old.

If you are here this week – please come and take what you like.  They are on a book cart right outside my office suite area in the Library.

Free … but the catch is that they aren’t brand new! We currently have a selection of great medical study/review books that have just been withdrawn from our collection because they are no longer the most current editions.

First come, first served – take as many as you like. But this is a limited time offer – they will only be available for the next 2 weeks.

Just stop at the Library Service Desk and they will show you the cart of books that are available. Enjoy!

A reminder to please Log Out of Access Medicine when you finish using one of their textbooks.

I am starting to get calls for help from students who are being asked to “log in” to Access Medicine to use various e-books. This is a signal to me that you all must have an assignment in either Harrisons Online or CMDT. We only have user licenses for 10 users at a time for these heavily used e-books – that means 10 people can be using the books at the same time. This restriction is further compounded by the fact that not logging out of Access Medicine when you are done looking at a book is actually keeping your spot busy for another 10 to 15 minutes.

The Log-Out button is on the top right hand corner of every page.

The Mindful Medical Student: a psychiatrist’s guide to staying who you are while becoming who you want to be - Dr. Jeremy Spiegel

Book description taken from the back cover: “Four years in medical school are not only demanding and competitive in a strictly academic sense, byt they may bring students face-to-face with perfectionism, anxiety, obsession, power plays, difficult patients, ethical dilemmas, identity crises, sleep deprivation, financial strain, and – perhaps for the first time in their lives – confrontations with disease, suffering, and death. The Mindful Medical Student will broaden readers’ perspectives and cultivate their ability to respond to the extreme emotional, psychological, and spiritutal challenges posed by medical school and, eventually, a medical career.”

This book can be found now on the New Book Table at the front of the Library.  It will eventually reside in the Book Room under the call number: R 737/S65/2009.
