    Need More Study Space?

It is not unusual to see more traffic in the Library during this upcoming period as students from across the University are also preparing for exams.  Unlike the Law Library, the Health Sciences Library receives state funding, so most space in the Library is available to all when we are open.

However, the ground floor group study rooms and the study rooms on the second floor are available for reservation by Health System affiliates only – so please take advantage of that policy and reserve the rooms for your use.   It is best to reserve in advance,  but same-day reservations are available for the first floor study rooms. Please reserve rooms in person at our Service Desk or call 434-924-5444.

    After-Hours Library Access

When the Library closes, only patrons with a valid Health System ID can use the after-hours space.  Anyone in this space without a Health System ID is in violation of Health System policy.  Please report any violations to Health System security at 982-3500 PIC# 1647.

If you have any concerns or questions while using the Library, please speak to Service Desk staff on duty. You may also contact me, especially if your concern doesn’t require immediate action. Karen (kknight@virginia.edu)

benfoxsmallYou take a break from late afternoon studying in the Library and head downstairs to the vending machines to buy a soda. You notice that there appears to be a money bag hanging from the machine.  You open up the bag and peek inside and the first thing you see is a $100 bill on top! You look over to the other drink machine and see a second bag full of money hanging from that machine.

What is this – double lottery winnings day – the best horoscope of your life day?!

If you are fourth year medical student Ben Fox (Class of 2014), you do the right thing and bring both bags of money to the Library’s Service Desk to be turned over to Health System Security.

Now, that is what I call the UVa Honor System at work!  You can see a Honor Code emblem affixed to the study carrel where Ben is working in the picture above.  But I have to believe that this young man carries the Honor Code in his heart.

    Congratulations!

Operation Smile, a charity organization, travels worldwide to provide much needed surgical services for repair of cleft lips and cleft palates.

After receiving life-transforming surgery, each child receives a Smile Bag with goodies – including a mirror to see their new smile for the first time!

You have a chance to support this charity’s work by bringing items from the list below between February 12 – March 4 and adding them to the Operation Smile box in the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library:

    • small comb (no rat tails)
    • new wash cloth
    • bar of soap (small hotel size)
    • sample size toothpaste (check expiration date – not expired)
    • child size toothbrush (single package)
    • small stuffed animal (Beanie Baby® size)
    • 8 pack box of coloring crayons
    • thin 8.5” x 11” coloring book

On behalf of everyone at the Health Sciences Library I would like to personally welcome you to Medical School.  My name is Karen Knight, and as the Medical Education Librarian I serve as your direct link to the Library.

We have several activities planned for your first two weeks to help you get started on the right foot. The Library will host a Wireless Clinic on Monday, August 10 from 9:00am to 1:30pm. I will be providing an overview of library services and collections on Thursday, August 13 as part of Cells to Society.  You will also have an opportunity to tour the Library facility on Wednesday, August 19 to scope out the best places to study, get help, and learn more about the wide range of information resources we provide.

I hope that you will use our special Medical Student Web Portal (often referred to as the Bookbag) for quick links to your email, Student Source, class readings, and more.  And I hope you will regularly visit “Karen’s Desk” for the latest news from the Library. I look forward to hearing from you with questions and suggestions over the next four years!

    Karen
